Springtime is here and for many, this new season brings a renewed spirit for adventure. If you find yourself driving around town, going on a long weekend vacation or simply enjoying the views on your morning commute, be sure to practice safe driving.

The old saying is that “April showers bring May flowers,” and with larger amounts of rainfall, there is an increased risk of accidents on the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wet pavement causes 70% of weather-related car accidents and that rain causes 46% of weather-related accidents. As a result of weather-related accidents, more than 6000 people are killed and 445,000 people are injured on average.

This spring, as you’re enjoying the beautiful blooms, the mild temperatures and the later days, remember to keep these safe driving tips in mind, especially as the April showers come through.

Check your tires

It’s important to have good tire tread as it “provides your vehicle a firm grip on the road, allowing you to remain balanced and upright on its surface while you drive.”

Wash away the pollen

One of the inconveniences of spring in North Carolina is the massive amounts of pollen that pollute the air every year. Be sure to wash the yellow dust off of your car’s windshield and windows before getting back on the road. Keeping a clear view of what’s around you is an important part of safe driving.

Weather the Storm

If you find yourself driving through a rainstorm, be sure to adjust how you are driving. Slow down, increase the distance between you and the car in front of you, turn off cruise control, and stay focused.

Don’t Panic

If the wet road conditions cause your car to skid, don’t panic. Continue to look at the road in front of you, steer in the direction you want the car to go, and avoid slamming on your brakes. Once you regain control of the car, it may be wise to pull over and turn on your hazard lights until road conditions improve.

Practice Safe Driving

No matter what season it is, it’s important to practice safe driving when you’re behind the wheel. Always wear your seat belt, go the speed limit and don’t drive distracted.
